There are lots of dangers when exploring volcanoes. One of them is there are lots of toxic gases on volcanoes. You will die if you are not wearing a gas mask. It is also very hot on volcanoes. You have to wear heatproof suits, gloves and boots in order to survive. Sometimes there can be red hot rivers. Red hot rivers are flows of lava. They are not as destructive or large as pyrolestic flows but they can still be deadly to any living organism that touches it. Pyrolestic flows are like red hot rivers but way more dangerous. They usually have toxic fumes all around them. Pyrolestic flows travel from volcanoes at hurricane speeds. They are usually as hot as a kiln if not hotter and some can go on for almost 100 kilometers.
Pyrolestic flows
This is a pyrolestic flow. This is the size they can be flowing down a volcano after an eruption. Pyrolestic flows are usually black because after an eruption ash and debris will be everywhere and they will usually get in the lava. The ash will build up making the flow black. There are also a lot of toxic fumes in pyrolestic flows. They are extremly hot too. Because of this pyrolestic flows can kill you without the lava even touching you. Because pyrolestic flows are so fast, if you see one at top speed you don't stand much of a chance. some are not very wide and could be avoided, others however are are a giant flow of destruction destroying everything, living or not, in it's path. The average speed of a pyrolestic flow is around 100-120 kilometers an hour. About as fast as a hurricane. They can also travel up to 100 kilometers before they stop or dry up and turn into rock. Pyrolestic flows are probaly one of the biggest threats volcanoes deliver.
Gas mask
You need gas masks to survive on some parts of volcanoes. The reason is there are lots of toxic gases on volcanoes. Most of these would kill you very quickly if you are not wearing a gas mask. You will need a gas mask near the top of a volcano. You will also need a heat proof suit to protect you. If you are at the bottom of a volcano you will likely not need a gas mask.
What kinds of volcanoes are there?
The two kinds of volcanoes that I am going to tell you about are cinder cones and stratovolcanoes. Cinder cones are volcanoes that erupt bits of lava from a vent, they are not as destructive as stratovolcanoes but can be a threat depending on how much they erupt. Stratovolcanoes are way more destructive. They will send ash and rocks everywhere going fast enough speeds to destroy anything in there path. Becouse of all the rocks and debris they shoot everywhere it can also be very challenging to explore this volcano after an eruption.
Another type of volcano is a shield volcano. I do not know much about them. you can click the button bellow to learn about them.
