Volcanologists need a lot of things to survive on volcanoes and there are lots of things that help them explore where humans can't go. To survive they will need things like a heat proof suit and a gas mask. Volcanologists will also use things like a thermocuople to measure the temperature of lava. They also have machines that measure when eruptions will occur and the size of them roughly.
What has Canada done?
One thing that canada has made for the exploration of volcanoes is the NIRST satellite. It is used to get temperatures of areas near volcanoes and at the volcano. It can detect hot spots and volcanic activities. It's real name is the New Infrared Sensor Technology Radiometer. The sensors on the NIRST were designed by the canadian space agency in Quebec. It was launched in 2011 and will be in orbit for 5 years.
Dante robot
Another thing used to explore volcanoes is the Dante robot 1 and 2. They were used to explore actice volcanoes from the inside. It can climb up steep mountains then decends into the volcano. It was used to explore Mt. Erubus in Antarctica. The volcano has a magma lake in it. The Dante robot was meant to figure out the chemical and isotopic gases that come from the lake. It survived the harsh environment but at a critical time the communications tether failed and they had to rescue the robot.
The tried to make a Dante robot 2. They were trying to fix and improve the communications tether. They cancelled the mission because it was too expensive and they did not want to risk another failed mission.
